Media Release, 21 September 2026

Every family and community deserves to be safe. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, connected to culture, and able to realise their full potential.

The 2026 Intergenerational Report (IGR), released today, shows this is connected to national future prosperity. As our population ages and workforce growth slows, the strength of our communities, our wellbeing, and our ability to participate fully in education, employment and civic life will matter more than ever.

That is why investing in the safety, wellbeing and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities is an investment in Australia’s future.

Community-controlled organisations are demonstrating what works: solutions built by communities, grounded in culture, and focused on long-term outcomes. These approaches strengthen families, support children, reduce disadvantage and build resilience for generations to come.

As governments, policymakers and sector leaders consider the findings of the Intergenerational Report, we should remember that intergenerational wellbeing is about people as much as projections.

A stronger Australia in 2066 will depend on whether Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children have the opportunity to thrive in 2026.
